Myths & Disputes

TAKEAWAY: The inspected 1946 promotion is for Negro Digest, not an identified Ebony advertisement. The limited negative search and unresolved page citation must accompany that correction.

MYTHS & DISPUTES

Newspaper advertising identification — January 20, 1946: A citation investigated as a possible Ebony promotion instead yielded a verifiable Negro Digest display advertisement. A researcher reported finding no Ebony advertisement in the complete searched edition of that date; this negative finding cannot establish that Ebony was never advertised in the Tribune or elsewhere. The exact printed page/section is still being reconciled: the researcher cites Metropolitan Section, Part 3, p. 4, a separate citation document says p. 1, and the newly supplied advertisement PDF is labeled “pg. S5.” BEHI requested clarification before finalizing the citation.

This section names the proposition being tested and the record’s limits. An unsupported amount is not automatically false; an inaccurate workbook entry is not an original-document finding. Disputes in the historical correspondence are retained rather than removed to make the founder’s story smoother.

A claim-check chart for publishing history

Free copies = paid sales? The 763-copy campaign is explicitly complimentary. It establishes preparation and fulfillment activity, not subscription revenue.DOCUMENTED
An offer = a settled fee?The $25 commission is an offer; the $10 reprint has acknowledgment. The 1948 fee inquiry adds evidence that a requested check had not yet arrived.DOCUMENTED
Partner = endorser?NAACP cooperation with a mailing coexists with its refusal of an election prediction. Participation must be tied to the exact activity.DOCUMENTED
Letterhead = ownership?Named company and officer titles corroborate operating identity. They do not supply stock ownership, charter amendments, or property title.OPEN
Promise = published correction? The January 1949 reply documents a commitment. Issue-level inspection is needed to establish whether the response was printed.OPEN

COMMON SOURCES OF CONFUSION

â—†
No borrowed totals

Readers, paid copies and personal fortune stay separate.

â—†
No automatic endorsement

An invitation does not prove acceptance or approval.

â—†
No silent correction

Research errors are recorded and superseded.

THE RECORD & ITS LIMITS

1
Payment and distribution

The acknowledged $10 check is a specific transaction. It does not prove universal prompt payment; the 1948 unreceived-check letter qualifies that generalization. The 763 copies are explicitly complimentary.

2
Reputation and accuracy

White’s assessment of Negro Digest belongs to its date and speaker. Polling objections and the 1949 complaint document disagreements; a promise to print a response is not proof that it appeared.

3
Corporate and historical firsts

No incorporation date, stock capitalization, headquarters purchase price or personal wealth ranking is certified from letterhead or earlier notes. A Du Bois editorial request is not a commercial endorsement.

BEHI RESEARCH STANDARD

READING THE EVIDENCE

INSTITUTE ANALYSIS

The audit resolves errors where the original is clear and leaves genuine historical questions open. That approach protects both the subject’s contribution and the reader’s ability to distinguish documented action from an appealing but unverified claim.

Primary archival correspondence — supplied scanJuly–August 1944VERIFIEDThe August 3 letter specifies 763 wrapped complimentary copies, 763 two-cent stamps and four separate boxes. August 8 acknowledges the stamps; August 25 requests a handling-cost statement and promises a check; August 31 correspondence and an internal memorandum record arrival and planned handling/mailing. Receipt and fulfillment preparation are documented, not delivery to every recipient or paid circulation. Earlier workbook dates for pp. 12 and 15 are corrected to August 31.

BEHI-P013-S08
Primary archival correspondence — supplied scanJanuary–March 1946VERIFIEDThe January 2 letter and January 16 telegram offer $25 for at least 500 words on the negative side of compulsory military training. Wilkins’s January 17 reply asks for precise length and deadline; a March 20 reply acknowledges roundtable copies. The earlier workbook’s communism label is incorrect. An offer and acceptance are not proof of final payment.

BEHI-P013-S09
Primary archival correspondence — supplied scanMarch 1946ATTRIBUTEDA March 6 letter praises Negro Digest and Ebony. The March 8 outgoing telegram to David O. Selznick calls Negro Digest “WHOLLY REPUTABLE” and says it carries no advertising. This is White’s contemporaneous assessment of Negro Digest, not an independent audit, an Ebony advertising statement or a perpetual company-wide rule.

Unreceived contributor fee — follow-up request
BEHI-P013-S15
Primary archival correspondence — supplied scanFebruary 17, 1948VERIFIEDThe secretary to Walter White says the check for “Why I Remain a Negro” has not been received and asks when to expect it. No amount or later settlement is established here. The original date is February 17, not February 27. This qualifies any blanket assertion that all contributor payments were prompt.

BEHI-P013-S17
Primary archival correspondence — supplied scanAugust–September 1948DISPUTEDWhite queries the magazine’s characterization of Black participation in opinion polls, obtains replies from Roper and Gallup and shares them with Johnson. The exchange establishes a challenge and responses, not BEHI’s endorsement of either sampling method or certification of the magazine’s broad claim. Copies overlap.

Johnson’s January 19 reply apologizes, directs more careful fact checking and says the magazine plans to print White’s letter.
