TAKEAWAY: The register combines operational evidence with archival and photographic leads. Image distribution does not establish authorship, copyright ownership, or reproduction permission.

COMPANY RECORDS

Johnson–Kennedy photograph: Smithsonian copy located — October 27, 2026

Repository correspondence: Library of Congress reference librarian Kate Phillips confirmed that Cooper & Golin distributed the photograph to the newspaper. LOC has no additional information identifying its photographer. Distribution by a publicity agency does not establish authorship or copyright ownership.

Second archival copy: The Smithsonian catalog identifies John H. Johnson presenting The Kennedy Years and the Negro to Robert Kennedy in June 1964. Its description reports a $5,000 contribution from the book's proceeds to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library.

Citation: Smithsonian Institution Archives, Accession 90-105, Science Service Records, Image No. SIA2008-4452. View Smithsonian catalog record.

Evidence limits: Smithsonian catalog details were reviewed in a supplied screenshot; the original Smithsonian print, reverse, and associated file have not yet been inspected by BEHI. The catalog and LOC publicity caption describe the contribution; neither independently verifies payment through a check, ledger, or recipient acknowledgment. The exact event day, photographer, and applicable reproduction terms remain unresolved. No new image-use clearance is recorded.

Follow-up status: BEHI sent the Smithsonian an inquiry for front/reverse scans, caption or release, credit and rights information, supporting contribution records, and a high-resolution reproduction estimate. BEHI also replied to LOC; Kate's review of an unprocessed NAACP folder remains pending. No paid reproduction order is recorded.

Contracts & Transactions — new primary-source finding: Yale Beinecke, Richard Wright Papers, JWJ MSS 3, Box 100, Folder 1412, PDF pp. 17–20: October 1949 letter and Johnson Publishing Company-signed agreement proposing Richard Wright as contributing editor for four articles annually; the first two at $500 each on acceptance and subsequent fees by negotiation. Stated term: November 1, 1949 through October 31, 1950. Wright's signature is not visible; bilateral execution and actual payment are not established.

Operational and rights records: The same folder documents editorial solicitation and proposed contributor fees in 1944–1946 (PDF pp. 2–4, 15–16), and proposed $100 republication rights in February 1950 (p. 22). These provide direct evidence of editorial and licensing practices, not audited expenditure totals. See Receipts for citation, limits and private-access status.

The permanent eight-category framework is applied to Johnson’s publishing enterprise. A contemporary record, a finding-aid description and an acquisition target carry different evidentiary weight. Records associated with the company do not automatically establish Johnson’s personal ownership, wealth or liability.

Eight categories, four connected lines of inquiry

Entity & rights

Incorporation and IP records should connect charter, amendments, magazine titles, and specific permissions. The January 1944 reprint exchange supplies a transaction-level starting point.

Money & reconciliation

Financial and Ledgers & Accounts records should match fees, orders, reimbursements, and bank entries. The acknowledged $10 check and unreceived 1948 fee show why dates and settlement status matter.

Operations & agreements

Operational and Contracts & Transactions records can connect proof exchange, mailing work, reader service, and supplier obligations. Correspondence documents episodes; contracts and accounts can establish their wider terms.

Governance & reporting

Legal & Regulatory and Reports & Correspondence records should identify filings, reporting periods, and institutional custody. A catalog description helps locate an item but does not verify all of its contents.

BEHI research map using the existing eight categories below. Priority originals: Illinois charter and amendments; title-specific circulation statements; advertising invoices; contributor and payroll ledgers; deed and financing instruments. CPL’s Era Bell Thompson finding aid identifies company-material leads, including Box 68; the underlying folders remain uninspected.

THE RECORD & ITS LIMITS

1
Formation and rights

Letterhead corroborates operating identity. Original incorporation and amendment instruments remain needed; the permissions exchange supports specific reprints rather than blanket ownership of every text.

2
Money and property

Receipts distinguish a described check from an offer and a promised reimbursement. Deeds, advertising contracts, payrolls and reconciled ledgers are necessary for aggregate financial conclusions.

3
Research deliveries

The 91-page folder and six Ayer spreads were recovered. The 1947 directory, ABC statements, advertised revenue pages and later Fuller files were not recovered for reinspection and remain targets.

INSTITUTE ANALYSIS

The records framework stays constant across Profiles while the content remains subject-specific. Verification attaches to an exact proposition and inspection scope, not to the prestige of a repository or the presence of a record title.

FINANCIAL

Federal bankruptcy financial records — 2019 acquisition trail

Identified court case: U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Northern District of Illinois, Chapter 7, No. 19-10236, filed April 9, 2019 by Johnson Publishing Company, LLC (subsequently styled J Publication Company). A publicly accessible reproduction of the opening petition (Docket 1) reports estimated assets of $10,000,001–$50 million, estimated liabilities of $10,000,001–$50 million, and 200–999 creditors. These are preliminary petition brackets, not audited balances or confirmed claims.

Independent docket findings (October 20, 2026): The reproduced 35-page opening petition (Docket 1) identifies a corporate ownership statement in its contents; the original court-filed image and ownership details still require inspection. The public docket identifies Docket 725 (August 18, 2026), Chapter 7 final account and application to close case and discharge trustee, and Docket 726 (August 19, 2026), case closed and trustee discharged. A June 3, 2024 bankruptcy court opinion identifies Chapter 7 trustee Miriam Stein Granek and a contested potential tax-penalty issue. Original records sought: Court-source petition and ownership statement; Schedules A/B, D, E/F, G and H; statement of financial affairs; amendments; asset-disposition and trustee financial reports; Docket 725 final account and Docket 726 closure order/docket entry. Docket identifiers for schedules and any beneficial-owner/share percentages must be verified from the official case docket before being claimed. The creditor mailing matrix is not a substitute for financial schedules.

Entity boundary: The 2019 LLC cannot be presumed legally identical to the 1942 Negro Digest Publishing Company, Inc.; original charter, amendments, reorganization and ownership-transfer instruments remain outstanding.

Research access: Bankruptcy court case reference; official PACER access; third-party reproduction of Docket 1. Classification: court case identified; document-level verification and acquisition in progress. Updated October 20, 2026.

REPORTS & CORRESPONDENCE

1964 book publicity and reported $5,000 contribution

A photograph and attached publicity caption preserved in the Library of Congress New York World-Telegram & the Sun Collection, John H. Johnson folder, show and describe Johnson presenting The Kennedy Years and the Negro to Attorney General Robert Kennedy. The caption states that a $5,000 check represented Johnson Publishing Company’s contribution to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library, drawn from advance sales of the book. It identifies Doris E. Saunders as the book’s editor and head of the company’s book division, with an introduction by Andrew Hatcher. The caption is distributed under the name Cooper & Golin; the print reverse bears a June 9, 1964 stamp.

Evidence classification: Contemporary photographic and publicity-caption evidence. The stamp is not independently established as the event date. The caption documents the reported contribution and publishing roles; it is not a canceled check, bank record, or recipient acknowledgment and does not establish total book revenue or profit. Independent confirmation of payment remains outstanding.

Primary archival reproduction — 91 PDF pages1944–1949 correspondence; undated itemsVERIFIEDOriginal PDF preserved unchanged. All 91 scans received a visual inventory; working OCR was compared with the earlier workbook and consequential claims were checked at full resolution. Pages include overlapping sheets, copies, backs and enclosures, not 91 independent letters. This is not a complete diplomatic transcription. The file documents specific transactions and editorial work, not a complete company account.
NAACP Records, General Office File, Box IIA449, Negro Digest, folder 3; supplied 91-page PDF
Walter White’s praise and Selznick recommendation
BEHI-P013-S09
Primary archival correspondence — supplied scanMarch 1946ATTRIBUTEDA March 6 letter praises Negro Digest and Ebony. The March 8 outgoing telegram to David O. Selznick calls Negro Digest “WHOLLY REPUTABLE” and says it carries no advertising. This is White’s contemporaneous assessment of Negro Digest, not an independent audit, an Ebony advertising statement or a perpetual company-wide rule.
NAACP Records, General Office File, Box IIA449, Negro Digest, folder 3; supplied 91-page PDF; PDF pp. 43–47
Polling critique and replies from Roper and Gallup
BEHI-P013-S17
Primary archival correspondence — supplied scanAugust–September 1948DISPUTEDWhite queries the magazine’s characterization of Black participation in opinion polls, obtains replies from Roper and Gallup and shares them with Johnson. The exchange establishes a challenge and responses, not BEHI’s endorsement of either sampling method or certification of the magazine’s broad claim. Copies overlap.
NAACP Records, General Office File, Box IIA449, Negro Digest, folder 3; supplied 91-page PDF; PDF pp. 77–87
Crystal Ball complaint and correction commitment
BEHI-P013-S18
Primary archival correspondence — supplied scanJanuary 11–19, 1949VERIFIEDWhite disputes the magazine’s prediction about NAACP leadership. Johnson’s January 19 reply apologizes, directs more careful fact checking and says the magazine plans to print White’s letter. The promise is documented; publication of that letter has not been checked in a later issue.
NAACP Records, General Office File, Box IIA449, Negro Digest, folder 3; supplied 91-page PDF; PDF pp. 88–91

BEHI-P013-S19
Historical directory — six scanned spreads1946VERIFIEDAll six supplied spreads were inventoried. Printed pp. 1206–1207 list Black publications; the Chicago Negro Digest entry refers to the catalog rather than giving a numerical circulation total on this spread. Most supplied pages are statistical context. The complete title entry, catalog and circulation legend are still needed. Neither an Ebony circulation total nor an audited sales series is established by this excerpt.

BEHI-P013-S23
Primary institutional transfer announcementJuly 28, 2022VERIFIEDThe institutional announcement documents transfer of the Ebony and Jet photographic archive to Getty and the Smithsonian. Its described scale and processing commitment concern archive preservation, not paid magazine circulation, Johnson’s personal net worth or the company’s historical profit. The record reflects posthumous custody and does not make Johnson responsible for later corporate decisions.

BEHI-P013-S29
Primary archival acquisition target1961–1976 research rangeATTRIBUTEDEarlier research identifies AUC Hoyt Fuller Papers, including Box 22 Folders 10 and 23 and account/compensation leads in Boxes 15, 19 and 21. Underlying letters were not recovered. Later revival, title change and closure require issue-level dates and the correspondence; the initial run must not be treated as the entire publication history.

Primary archival correspondence — supplied scanNovember 1946–December 1947VERIFIEDLetterhead identifies Negro Digest Publishing Company as publisher of Negro Digest and Ebony at 5125 S. Calumet Avenue, Chicago 15. Beckett signs as general manager; Johnson signs as president on November 20, 1947. This corroborates operating identity and named roles, not an inspected incorporation charter, capital stock, shareholders or legal amendment.
