c. 1825–unknown
Sailmaker, Business Partner
“Anthony, Bolivar & Co., sailmrs., 92 S whfs.”
Overview
TAKEAWAY: Directories and the census document Bolivar as a Philadelphia sailmaker and business partner. His connection to the Forten enterprise still requires transaction-level confirmation.
BEHI PROFILE — RESEARCH IN PROGRESS — UPDATED NOVEMBER 3, 2026. EVIDENCE IS CLASSIFIED CLAIM BY CLAIM; ATTRIBUTED ACCOUNTS AND UNRESOLVED RESEARCH QUESTIONS ARE IDENTIFIED THROUGHOUT.
WHY HE IS IN THE RECORD
George W. Bolivar was a sailmaker and business partner in Philadelphia’s maritime economy. City directories list Anthony, Bolivar & Co. in 1849 and Bolivar, Anthony & Co. in 1850.
The 1850 federal census records his occupation as sailmaker. These records document his participation in the manufacturing businesses that supplied the city’s waterfront.
A business record built from complementary sources
The firm in print
Two directories name Bolivar in a sailmaking partnership, supplying dated trade and address evidence. The listings locate an enterprise within Philadelphia’s waterfront economy.
The worker in a household
The 1850 census identifies sailmaking as his occupation. Its household context helps connect a named person with the business listings, while archival locator review remains open.
Property as a separate measure
The census reports $8,000 in real estate. It adds a property question to the business history without measuring the firm’s receipts or profits.
Succession as a research question
Winch’s account links Anthony and Bolivar to Forten’s sail loft. The original acquisition terms are needed to explain the transfer of an established business.
Source map: GB-S001–S003, directories and census; GB-S005, Winch (1997), p. 217. Evidence classifications and inspection limits remain those of the linked records below.
BEHI analysis: skilled work, partnership, property, and succession are connected parts of the inquiry, with different documents required for each.

What Would Move This Profile Forward?
These are the next evidence priorities for strengthening this Profile. Each identifies a concrete research step and what it could help establish.
- Receive and examine the digitized receipt book
Complete delivery of the APS George W. Bolivar Receipt book, 1845–1850, and transcribe its dated entries. This could establish individual payments and counterparties; digitization alone does not verify the contents.
- Recover the Forten-business purchase agreement
Seek executed transfer and partnership documents naming Bolivar and Charles Anthony. These would establish the date, assets and consideration behind the reported acquisition.
- Connect the census property figure to instruments
Match the inspected 1850 real-estate entry to deeds, assessments and probate records. These would explain the reported holding without treating it as business revenue or total net worth.
- Verify training and civic-record identities
Inspect any surviving apprenticeship or employment record and the original July 25, 1844 Vigilant Committee entry. These would test the attributed Forten training relationship and confirm the identity of the committee participant.
Read the Research Gaps & Open Questions for the unresolved issues and evidence limits. New material is reviewed before claims or classifications change.

Background
TAKEAWAY: The 1850 census documents Bolivar’s location, occupation, and reported age and birthplace. His early training and the identity behind an antislavery committee reference remain under investigation.
EARLY LIFE & ORIGINS
The 1850 federal census places George W. Bolivar in Philadelphia’s Spruce Ward. It records him as 25 years old, born in North Carolina, and employed as a sailmaker.
The Historical Society of Pennsylvania’s finding aid reports that G. W. Bolivar was appointed to Philadelphia’s Vigilant Committee on July 25, 1844. This provides an attributed link to the city’s antislavery civic network. The original manuscript has not yet been inspected, and the identity match remains under review.
His exact birth date, route to Philadelphia, and early training remain under investigation.
Identity, occupation, and relationships
North Carolina origin
The inspected census copy records age 25 and a North Carolina birthplace in 1850. About 1825 is an inference from age, not an established exact birth date.
Philadelphia residence
Spruce Ward, dwelling 497, family 722, and line 27 identify the research copy’s household entry. The original repository designation remains subject to confirmation.
Charles Anthony
The directory evidence names a business association. It does not establish the partners’ relative investment, managerial duties, or ownership shares.
A civic identity lead
The HSP finding aid names G. W. Bolivar in a July 25, 1844 appointment. The manuscript and corroborating identity records are needed before securely joining this person to the sailmaker.

The Problem
TAKEAWAY: Bolivar worked in the sailmaking economy supporting maritime commerce. The records establish occupation and partnership, but not a particular invention or product improvement.
THE ECONOMIC PROBLEM
Sailing vessels depended on skilled workers to make and maintain their sails. Philadelphia’s waterfront supported businesses that supplied this essential equipment.
Bolivar’s documented work belonged to this manufacturing economy. His story also raises a question about business succession: how could an established sailmaking enterprise continue after its founder’s death?
The available records establish Bolivar’s occupation and partnership. They do not yet identify a particular invention, patented process, or product improvement attributable to him.
A maritime trade required skill and business continuity
Equipment for vessels
Sailmaking supplied an essential part of sailing transportation. BEHI analysis places the occupation within productive waterfront manufacturing rather than assuming an undocumented invention.
An organized workplace
A named partnership raises questions about tools, materials, premises, labor, and customers. Directories establish the published trade; operating accounts would reveal how work was organized.
Transfer of an enterprise
The attributed Forten succession account concerns continuity after a founder. A purchase instrument could identify what was transferred: assets, premises, obligations, or other business interests.
Capital and cash flow
A property valuation does not show funds available to buy materials or pay workers. Cash, credit, receivables, costs, and revenue require transaction records.

DIMENSIONS OF THE PROBLEM
BEHI interprets sailmaking as a productive trade supplying maritime transportation.
Directory entries establish named business associates, but the division of labor remains unknown.
Scholarly accounts connect this business with Forten’s loft; the original training record is still sought.

What He Built
TAKEAWAY: Bolivar participated in a named sailmaking partnership. The original agreements are still needed to establish ownership shares, succession terms, and operating results.
THE SAILMAKING PARTNERSHIP
Philadelphia directories identify Anthony, Bolivar & Co. as sailmakers at 92 South Wharves in 1849. The 1850 directory lists Bolivar, Anthony & Co. at Hammond Street Wharf.
Historian Julie Winch connects George Bolivar and Charles Anthony to the purchase of the Forten family’s sail loft. Her inspected 1997 article, printed page 217, describes a purchase from Forten’s heirs in the 1840s and cites Minton (1913), page 16. The more precise 1844-or-1845 date referenced in A Gentleman of Color, page 338, remains subject to direct page review. This is a scholarly account of the succession; the original acquisition agreement has not yet been established in this profile’s evidence set.
The directory entries document a named sailmaking partnership. Its purchase price, division of ownership, financing, and formal legal structure remain unproven.

What the comparison supports
Bolivar appears in consecutive annual directories in a named sailmaking business. Published name order alone does not prove a change in control, shares, or legal structure.
What must be reconstructed
Partnership articles, a purchase agreement, leases, and dated accounts could establish ownership, premises, financing, and continuity. The two addresses alone do not settle whether operations moved.

Accomplishments
TAKEAWAY: Directory listings and census evidence document Bolivar’s skilled occupation, partnership, and reported property. These findings do not establish the firm’s earnings.
DOCUMENTED ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Bolivar appears by name in a Philadelphia sailmaking partnership in both the 1849 and 1850 city directories.
The 1850 census independently identifies his occupation as sailmaker and records $8,000 in real estate. Together, these records document skilled work, participation in a business partnership, and property holdings.
The surviving evidence does not yet establish the firm’s workforce, annual production, sales, or profits.

Economic Impact
TAKEAWAY: The census records $8,000 in real estate for Bolivar. This is a property measure, not business revenue, profit, cash, or total net worth.
PARTICIPATION IN THE MARITIME ECONOMY
Sailmaking supplied equipment used by vessels carrying people and goods. Bolivar’s partnership therefore participated in the manufacturing businesses supporting Philadelphia’s maritime commerce.
The 1850 census records $8,000 in real estate for Bolivar. That figure describes reported real estate value; it is not a measure of business revenue, profit, cash, or total net worth.
His economic contribution can presently be described through his occupation, partnership, business locations, and property record. Its scale cannot yet be quantified from verified accounts.
One property figure, several different economic questions
$8,000 · real estate
Nominal-dollar value reported in the August 9, 1850 census entry. It concerns personal real estate and retains the census record’s attributed classification.
Company sales · unknown
No inspected sales ledger establishes annual receipts. The real-estate amount supplies neither a revenue figure nor a basis for calculating a profit margin.
Working capital · unknown
Cash, inventory, customer debts, and credit terms would explain the firm’s capacity to operate. A property entry does not establish these categories.
Net worth · unresolved
An ownership and liability reconstruction would need deeds, mortgages, other assets, and debts at a common date. The census amount alone cannot supply it.
Source map: GB-S003, census research copy; GB-S001–S002, trade listings. Evidence classifications and inspection limits remain those of the linked records below.
BEHI interpretation: the business participated in maritime supply through skilled manufacturing. Its scale, employment, and wider financial effects require accounts; no financial-growth chart is implied by this single property observation.
KEY ECONOMIC INDICATORS
Each measure identifies its entity, period, source and evidence limits. Dollar amounts are nominal historical U.S. dollars. Assets, revenue, profit, transaction amounts and employment measures are distinct. “Not yet established” identifies a research gap, not zero or “not applicable.”

GB-T003 — Census records Bolivar’s occupation and real estate
George Bolivar
The Spruce Ward census records George Bolivar, age 25, born in North Carolina, as a sailmaker, with $8,000 in real estate. The figure is real estate value, not business revenue, profit, or total net worth.
Myths & Disputes
TAKEAWAY: Apprenticeship, partnership, and ownership are distinct relationships. The $8,000 census figure concerns real estate, and the partnership’s dissolution remains unexplained.
WHAT THE RECORD DOES AND DOES NOT ESTABLISH
Was Bolivar a Forten apprentice? Winch’s 1997 article describes Bolivar as one of Forten’s former apprentices and cites Minton (1913), page 16. This is an attributed scholarly account; an apprenticeship agreement or equivalent contemporaneous training record has not yet been inspected. Employment, apprenticeship, partnership, and ownership are distinct relationships and require separate support.
Did he have an $8,000 business? The census figure refers to real estate value. It does not establish the value or earnings of the sailmaking firm.
Why did the partnership end? Later directory listings change, but no verified dissolution agreement or explanation has been established.
What does the census prove about racial identity? A blank color column should not be treated as sufficient evidence on its own. Identity must be assessed across the full documentary record.
Relationships that must not be collapsed
Source map: GB-S001–S005. Evidence classifications and inspection limits remain those of the linked records below.
BEHI evidence chart: test the exact relationship rather than carry certainty from one document into a different claim. Later departure and dissolution explanations remain unproven.
BEHI interprets sailmaking as a productive trade supplying maritime transportation.
Directory entries establish named business associates, but the division of labor remains unknown.
Scholarly accounts connect this business with Forten’s loft; the original training record is still sought.
COMMON SOURCES OF CONFUSION
Property valuations, turnover, profits, and net worth require different records.
A repository description or scholarly reference is attributed rather than automatically verified.
A workshop improvement is not proof of a patent.
Names, dates, and portrait attributions must retain their source qualifications.

|
The inspected July 25, 1844 minute-book entry documents an appointment under the name G. W. Boliver. The finding aid summarizes the same appointment. The entry does not explain the replacement of Purvis, establish individual aid to particular freedom seekers, or securely resolve the member’s identity as the sailmaker. Committee-level finances must not be attributed to Bolivar personally. |

Legacy
TAKEAWAY: Bolivar expands the record of Black maritime manufacturing beyond its best-known figures. Business succession remains a central question for further documentary research.
THE RECORD AND ITS CONTINUING QUESTIONS
Bolivar’s record expands the history of Black participation in Philadelphia’s maritime manufacturing economy beyond its best-known figures.
His story brings skilled work, business partnership, civic networks, and property holdings into the same historical inquiry. The connection to the Forten enterprise also makes business succession an important research question.
BEHI’s continuing work is to connect these records to the original agreements and accounts that can explain how the enterprise operated and how ownership changed.
Why a short surviving record still matters
Skilled Black enterprise
The named partnership and occupation widen the history of Black participation in maritime manufacturing beyond its most prominent founders.
Business across generations
The Forten succession account opens an inquiry into how expertise and enterprises continued after a founder. Original agreements can clarify rather than merely repeat that narrative.
Economic and civic records
The finding-aid appointment invites study of a possible connection between commercial and antislavery networks, with the identity boundary kept visible.
Recovery rather than invention
A receipt book, deeds, and partnership papers could expand the account. Missing totals do not erase the existing named record or justify filling it with speculative numbers.
Source map: GB-S001–S005 and the APS receipt-book catalog lead. Evidence classifications and inspection limits remain those of the linked records below.
BEHI interpretation. No later enterprise or individual is assigned a direct line of influence without evidence; exact life dates and portrait provenance remain open.
ENDURING LEGACY
The surviving listings preserve a named Black business partnership in the waterfront economy.
Winch attributes the loft’s later purchase to Anthony and Bolivar; original terms remain unresolved.
The committee finding aid supplies a research lead, with the identity match still under review.
Life dates, training, transactions, and a verified portrait remain research questions.

Company Records
TAKEAWAY: APS staff examined Bolivar’s receipt book, and digitization was authorized. BEHI has not received or inspected the scans; individual transactions and publication permission remain unverified.
THE COMPANY EVIDENCE
Receipt book digitization — APS staff examination confirmed
Repository update, recorded October 27, 2026: Joe DiLullo of the American Philosophical Society reported examining the volume and finding approximately 25 pages with written content, followed by blank pages. APS estimated digitization at approximately $10. Its process covers the volume, with representative blank pages rather than every blank leaf.
Acquisition status: BEHI sent authorization to proceed at the approximate estimate and requested payment instructions or an invoice. BEHI requested all written pages, representative blank pages, covers, labels or inscriptions, and any loose inserts, if present. Payment and scan delivery are not yet confirmed.
Repository-suggested citation: George W. Bolivar Receipt book, Kane Family Papers. American Philosophical Society. The previously cataloged date range is 1845–1850; confirmation of that range and any collection, series, box, folder, or volume identifier has been requested.
Verification limits and open questions: This update records repository staff testimony and acquisition progress. BEHI has not received or inspected the scans; individual transactions, amounts, counterparties, and business relationships remain unverified. Reproduction terms, fees, and required credit for selected website, educational, and documentary uses have been requested; publication permission is not yet recorded.
Understanding the record counts: Show All includes five linked sources: two Operational directory records, one Ownership & Property census record, one archival finding aid, and one scholarly article. The last two support the profile but have no company-record category. Category counts need not add up to Show All; a record may also appear in more than one category.
COMPANY RECORDS BY CATEGORY

| Operational | GB-S001 and GB-S002 document firm names, sailmaking activity, and business addresses in 1849 and 1850. |
| Contracts & Transactions | Winch’s secondary account describes the Forten sail-loft succession. The original purchase agreement and terms remain unlocated. |
| Legal & Regulatory | No partnership agreement, dissolution document, business license, or relevant court filing in this evidence set. |
| IP | No patent, trademark, or copyright record attributable to Bolivar established in this evidence set. |
| Ledgers & Accounts | A George W. Bolivar receipt book, cataloged as 1845–1850, is held at the American Philosophical Society. APS staff examined the volume and reported approximately 25 written pages. BEHI authorized digitization at an estimated $10; payment and delivery remain unconfirmed. Contents not yet inspected by BEHI. |
| Reports & Correspondence | No company report or business correspondence inspected. The directory entries are published listings, not company reports. |
The present company evidence begins with Philadelphia directory entries for Anthony, Bolivar & Co. in 1849 and Bolivar, Anthony & Co. in 1850.
These entries establish the published firm names, trade, and business addresses. They do not establish incorporation, ownership shares, purchase terms, or financial performance.
The Library Company of Philadelphia’s PEAES guide lists a George W. Bolivar receipt book, 1845–1850, at the American Philosophical Society. This is a cataloged archival lead; the guide’s listing alone does not establish individual transactions or totals.
What a receipt-book inspection could resolve
Identify the record
Confirm the title, call number, provenance, complete date coverage, and author or business represented. A volume named for Bolivar may contain more than one kind of payment.
Classify each entry
Distinguish payment received, payment made, acknowledgment, balance, and other notation. Record dates, names, currency, and any stated purpose without assuming every amount is a sale.
Connect the counterparties
Compare names and addresses with directories and related records. Such matching could distinguish personal dealings from partnership activity.
Reconcile before totaling
Check duplicates, carry-forwards, currency, missing pages, and period coverage. Even a sum of entries would not automatically be annual revenue or net profit.

TAKEAWAY: Directories and census findings provide documentary anchors; succession and receipt-book transactions remain open questions. Repository examination is distinct from BEHI’s inspection of scans.
RECEIPTS & EVIDENCE
HOW TO READ THE EVIDENCE
BEHI distinguishes economic interpretation from documented transactions. Unknown amounts and missing instruments remain open research questions.
Follow the claim to its source, then read the evidence status and limits. A source may support one narrow fact while leaving a larger conclusion unresolved.
Content condition describes whether the question can currently be answered. Evidence classification describes the support for a documented finding.
- Documented: A finding is presented with its source, evidence classification and limits. Documented does not automatically mean Verified.
- Not yet established: The answer remains unresolved. The entry identifies missing evidence and connects to Research Gaps.
- Not applicable: The measure does not fit the person or enterprise being examined; an explanation must state why. Missing evidence alone never makes a question not applicable.
Shared section headings remain visible. Relevance that is uncertain is treated as Not yet established until resolved.
Evidence labels and source access
- Verified
- The specific fact or record described has been checked against the cited material. Read the limit: an inspected reproduction, index or catalog entry does not mean every underlying document or broader claim has been verified.
- Attributed
- The statement is credited to the named source. Independent confirmation or the underlying original may still be outstanding.
- Disputed
- Sources or interpretations conflict. Read the competing evidence and the unresolved question.
- Estimated
- The figure is an approximation or qualified valuation, not an exact measured total. Read its basis, date and uncertainty.
- Institute Analysis
- BEHI’s interpretation or calculation from identified evidence. It is separate from what the historical source directly states.
Source access: A link may lead to an original scan, a published transcription, a finding aid, or a repository page. Use the source ID, collection, box, folder and page locator where supplied. A catalog listing or repository confirmation is not inspection of the item itself.
Images and permissions: Historical support and reproduction permission are separate questions. Read each image credit and rights note; a source link does not itself grant permission to republish.
Open questions: See Research Gaps & Open Questions below for missing records and unresolved claims.
Linked evidence register. Five supporting records, five claims, five receipts, and three source-linked timeline events are saved with this profile. The directory page scans and census full page and household crop are attached. Research review remains in progress.

Sail-loft purchase and partnership terms
When, and on what terms, did George Bolivar and Charles Anthony acquire the Forten business? Winch’s inspected 1997 article reports a purchase in the 1840s.
Evidence needed: An executed purchase agreement, bills of sale, partnership articles, estate papers, or contemporary accounts identifying the parties, date, assets, and consideration.
Status: Primary transaction documents not yet located; the purchase account remains attributed to scholarship.
Vigilant Committee appointment and identity
Does the original July 25, 1844 entry confirm the finding aid’s account, and can its G. W. Bolivar be securely connected to the sailmaker?
Evidence needed: The original committee manuscript or a repository-supplied image, checked against directories and other identity records.
Status: Finding aid reviewed; original manuscript inspection and identity confirmation pending.
Apprenticeship with James Forten

RESEARCH UPDATES & RECONCILIATION
Receipt book digitized — delivery being arranged
Repository update — November 3, 2026: Thomas Johns, American Philosophical Society reference staff, confirms that the volume has been digitized. APS requested creation of an Aeon account and notification when registration is complete so delivery can be arranged. Account registration, scan delivery and payment are not confirmed in the correspondence currently available to BEHI.
Repository-supplied citation: George W. Bolivar Receipt book, 1845–1850, No. 7, Volume: 7. Kane Family Papers, Mss.Ms.Coll.115. American Philosophical Society.
Acquisition history, reproduction terms and evidence limits
APS staff previously reported approximately 25 pages with written content, followed by blank pages, and estimated digitization at approximately $10. That research-copy estimate is separate from publication charges.
Publication arrangements: APS clarified a $40 per image reproduction fee for the proposed website use and requires a publication permission form. BEHI requested clarification of page-by-page charges, any nonprofit educational or package rate, and whether permission covers both embedded display and download of the same page. Final scope, payment and permission remain pending; no authorization to publish the complete volume is recorded.
Evidence classification: Repository correspondence confirms digitization and the citation, not the volume’s substantive contents. BEHI has not yet received or inspected the scans. Individual transactions, amounts, counterparties, partnership terms and business finances remain unverified from this volume. No receipt-book images or downloads are released here.
