Banking context before Citizens Federal

1890: Reverend William Reuben Pettiford opened Alabama Penny Savings Bank in Birmingham, October 15, 1890. 1915: Following a merger with Prudential Savings Bank, the predecessor institution failed and its assets were liquidated. 1956: Gaston's Citizens Federal received its federal charter. These are milestones involving separate institutions; they are not a proven corporate succession.

Property title gap: Published municipal history reports that Gaston later purchased the former Penny Savings Bank building, but the original deed and intervening owners are still under investigation. Sources: Encyclopedia of Alabama and City of Birmingham.

TIMELINE AT A GLANCE

Early commercial records

1925–1933 state filings, insurer statements, funeral invoice and payment certificate.

Expansion across services

Later school, motel and cemetery milestones must be tied to each institution's own source records.

Later legal transformations

1983 Citizens Federal conversions, 1998 holding-company structure and 2003 acquisition occurred across a changing corporate history.

WHAT THE RECORD ALLOWS US TO SAY

An event after 1996 belongs to institutional succession, not to an action personally performed by Gaston after his death.

THE RECORD & ITS LIMITS

December 31, 1931 — regulatory transition documented

The Alabama Superintendent of Insurance reported that Booker T. Washington Burial Society of Fairfield was reinsured in Booker T. Washington Burial Insurance Co. of Fairfield. This contemporaneous regulatory record independently documents the transition in the enterprise structure.

A reported closure date does not establish corporate dissolution date. School operations, state authorization, accreditation and corporate existence are distinct.

March 29, 1954 — motel land transfer (secondary documentation)

National Park Service historical documentation dates the transfer of four parcels from Booker T. Washington Insurance Company to A. G. Gaston Motels, Inc. to March 29, 1954. A reported $64,637.72 consideration and the precise recorded deed remain subject to primary-source verification. Original incorporation and financing records have been requested.
